This dissertation explores the construction of subaltern groups' identity in two distinct phases of the Spanish Empire. Specifically, it focuses on Moriscos (Moorish) in Spain during the Golden Age (16th and 17th centuries), and mulattos in colonial Cuba during the 18th and 19th century. By exploring archival documents and literary texts from both periods, this work analyzes how people of marginalized groups deal with the dilemma of identity, questioning its fixity and manipulating its ambivalences. It also examines the discursive strategies employed by cultural or ethnically different subjects to shape and rewrite their selves, as well as the underlying act of resistance to power and authority. As for the historical documents, the dissertation studies five Moriscos' Inquisition trials from 1599 - found in the National Archive of Portugal (Torre do Tombo) -, and a legal trial concerning inter-racial marriage and |purity of blood| in 18th century Cuba - found in the General Archive of the Indies (Spain) -. All these materials are unpublished. The literary texts that complements the archival research and continue exploring the extent of identity instability, reinvention and transgression are The Supporter of Religion against the Infidels, written by the Spanish morisco Ahmad al-Haŷarī in 1637; and the novel Sofía (1891), by the Cuban writer Martín Morúa Delgado.
